26. Laxman

The kingdom was huge.

It canvassed like a painting and Laxman had a hard time figuring out exactly where it began and where it ended. The walls were granite and large, the gates had thorns and the grills were made of iron and brass. Even though it was a huge fortress, the kingdom was engulfed in big trees to be concealed from the common man’s eye.

Laxman was moving towards the fortress with Suparnika and her band of trusted Rakshasas whom she paid well to stay silent and follow her. They were not ready to be part of treason against the feared Dashanan, but somehow through gold and the fear of an Avatar, she won them to her side. But they were few in number and she had said — there was no turning back now.

Dashanan, one way or another, might get to know about Meenakshi’s hurtful betrayal, but to hell with it. She shrugged her shoulders and went on with the plan.

The first step was: Enter the kingdom with the help of Meenakshi’s reputation. Vali would easily entertain her, which he wouldn’t have done for others.

‘Keep an eye where most of the guards of Vali stand,’ Meenakshi said, as she rode her horse right next to Laxman.

Second step to the plan: Notice how the security of the kingdom was and identify the location of safe passages in the castle.

Laxman, on the other hand, had a helmet on and a breastplate with shades of dark colour from blackberries smeared on him. He had to look like a Rakshas, after all. And he was here solely for one reason — to help Meenakshi execute the plan and keep an eye on her, whether she was betraying them in the process of doing this.

You can’t trust a Rakshas.

Sugreev had said that to Raghav and Laxman in confidence, away from her.

The gates opened wide and Laxman’s eyes fell on the long towers that stood beyond the gates. Two towers.

‘This is the western gate of Kishkindha. The eastern gate is on the opposite side, while the north has a river and the south has a wasteland. You need to choose one gate from where Sugreev’s men will enter.’ Meenakshi directed him as Vali’s men led them towards the wrestling stadium where Vali currently was.

‘And where would Raghav come from?’

‘Depends. His entry must be a secret. You must plan fast and act quickly.’ Meenakshi had a stern face, but she constantly smiled at the civilians who bowed at her.

All in Vali’s kingdom respected her for she was Dashanan’s sister. The shacks and the shops were lined, the streets were wide, but not structured, the banners held up showed the symbol of Vali’s empire. All the citizens in Kishkindha were happy and content. Meenakshi pointed out the armoury, the treasury and the ministry complexes, though not many ministers survived to live there. The big palace of Vali wasn’t like the ones you would see in Ayodhya — grand and jewelled, but rather very simple. It was made of raw materials, isolated from the city.
